Improving the Drainage System of Pakistan

Drainage means the system, procedure or method of transferring excess water from a settlement area, such as city or town. The drainage system of Pakistan is very weak relative to other advanced and developed nations. We don’t have a good management structure and technologies to address this issue. In our cities, the state of sanitation is really poor.

A drainage system prevents standing water.

Karachi city has been faced with this serious problem and its complications due to heavy rain, especially during monsoon season. Water stays in the gutter and pipe system. This causes serious health issues on its citizens. For example, dengue fever, which is a serious virus spread by mosquitoes, then from one person to another. This significant insect is the result of the bad management of our country with its failure in the drainage of sanitation water.

Considering the brutal facts of the situation, many constructions have been carried out in the town of Nullah where the problem is most evident. The width of rain water drains and Nullah has been diminished. Most of the garbage uncovered have been cleared. Therefore, it is anticipated that the system will improve. The damages and diseases will decrease.

Drainage reforms must be implemented in such a manner as to ensure that policies are technologically feasible, commercially effective, socially appropriate and environmentally friendly.
