Family Counseling is Available Through Tough Times

Family counseling services are available near you, and online when facing or after divorce.

One must seek the family counseling available through tough times. During good times, putting the family first is a must because that is where help comes from. Every person deals with hard times in a different way. A family is made up of several different personality types. Each person has their own set of emotional needs.

Every family has several scripts they play out over and over again. Think about the times you’ve gone home for the holidays and your mother hands you the potatoes and a knife and without a word between you, you know she wants you to chop them up for her potato salad.

No one is perfect. When there is divorce, separation or death it can be hard for a parent to meet the needs of each person, let alone themselves. That’s where counseling can help. They ensure that every family member is involved in the healing process and taught skills that will help them deal with some of the overwhelming emotions that happen while they are at home. It’s okay to ask for help.

You Matter

As you are adjusting to the new roll of single parent you may be struggling with finding the balance between work and home life. With everything you do just to pay the bills and everything you do to cushion hard times for your children there isn’t time left in the day to take care of yourself. However, it’s important for you to be cared for as well.

In counseling you’ll have time to work through your feelings of anger, depression, general sadness, and the feeling of being overwhelmed with a counselor. You’ll find a listening ear and coach to help you get past the negative feelings and begin seeing the good things that happen each day. Besides helping you feel better about your life, the counselors can teach you skills to help you through this tough time with your children in mind.

Everyone Matters

Kids express their disappointment and grief differently than adults do. They often act out, cause problems, become aggressive; or, they can go the exact opposite direction and pull inward, cry easily, and withdraw from friends and family.

If you notice your child going through these stages there are ways you can help them. It’s possible that they have an emotional need that isn’t being met. A counselor can help determine what that need is and how you can fill it or recommend other avenues for the child so that they can fill that need on their own.

Script Re-Writes

Every family has several scripts they play out over and over again. Think about the times you’ve gone home for the holidays and your mother hands you the potatoes and a knife and without a word between you, you know she wants you to chop them up for her potato salad.

That’s a script. Everyone knows their lines and the part they play. Some scripts aren’t so happy. Some are negative scripts that cause damage to relationships. Your family may be stuck in a script that involves disruptive behavior, screaming, yelling and sometimes name calling.

Don’t fear, scripts can be re-written but sometimes you need an outside consultant. That’s what family counseling can help you to do. When just one of you changes your lines the other one is forced to adapt. That means a new script and a new, happier ending to the play.
